Their has been, an effect in photography, that goes back to wet color film processing days known as "Cross Processing" , for example developing E-6 Transparency film to a C-41 Color Negative, and or vice versa the more used C-41 to E-6 process which abstracts the color and gamma ,produces nice grainy shadows , and alters the gray scale. This has been able to be done in Photoshops or GIMP for a number of years by adjusting the Red Blue and Green color curves and levels and ending up which such a comparison as is posted here.
